The American Red Cross is rushing relief to storm-weary residents and launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers, tons of supplies and shoulders to lean on.

The easiest and most important thing a family can do is simply have a conversation about what they would do in the event of a disaster and put together a disaster kit.

We want to let the president know to cut a check to get the resources to the people that were most affected by this disaster. This disaster is (an event) this country has never seen.

The 2006 Godspeed Sail is designed to be a dynamic, memorable event. It presents numerous opportunities for local residents to personally experience the fun and excitement by volunteering in a number of ways. Typically, we don't have 75,000 people on our streets with 48 hours notice. This was a very serious event and it came out well for everyone, but on the same token, it wasn't a Fourth of July event. It was a highly visible, highly debated event.

Now is the time for residents to prepare and make sure they have their (disaster and evacuation) plans ready.

It's very important when we measure an event to recognize its impact on time. For example, an event eight hours before a competition may not be major, but if it happens 10 minutes [before] or during a competition, it's critical we do something.

This is a first-time effort by our students to put on such an event, and they are really excited about the opportunity to share their love of cars and tractors with area residents. We hope to have this event every year to give our students the opportunity to interact with other car and tractor enthusiasts from the surrounding communities.

These books now stand both as a testament to the resilience of the residents of New Orleans ... and as a map back from disaster, offered by the city's teenagers.
