Officials should have realized ordtak

Officials should have realized that the poor were not going to be able to evacuate the way everybody evacuated and some special provisions should have involved community leaders, ... People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

Civil rights leaders are involved in helping poor people. That's what I've been doing all my life.

If Black folks want to blame someone for this tragedy they only need to look in the mirror. Mayor Nagin has blamed everyone else except himself. The Mayor failed in his duty to evacuate and protect the people of New Orleans. Our prayers go out to the families of the deceased. Hopefully this will help Black people realize the folly of depending on the government or leaders and serve as a notice to avert future tragedies in other cities.

Most of the people who are affected are poor black people. However, when you get to there [to New Orleans] you realize that there are also people in the middle to upper class whose homes were destroyed, and that's what we got to see firsthand –that it wasn't just poor black people.

The assumption that when you go out to rescue a bunch of poor, black people, that they are going to be criminals, is racist. The only plan they ever seem to have for poor people is a jail plan.

We understand that this is long overdue. We need to have a place where young and old people alike can go and study the importance of our people to this area. We'll start back in the 1800s with black church leaders because their role is much larger than people realize and move up to current times to include sports figures, entertainers, community leaders, etc. We see this as a focal point of the area's black population.

We were impressed by both the reality and hope in the responses. In our work, we're seeing that communities can make great strides when they're willing to look at their current situation, identify their strengths, and then work together -- community members, elected officials, business leaders, educators and faith leaders -- to plan and implement strategies that attack poverty at its roots.

People are now beginning to voice what we've all been seeing with our own eyes -- the majority of people left in New Orleans are black, they are poor, they are the underbelly of society. When you look at this, what does this say about where we are as a country and where our government is in terms of how it views the people of this country? ... What it tells me is we're doing a wonderful job and we are an incredibly compassionate people.

It's so easy to say they should have just left, but it's not that easy. Many of the people who live there are actually dirt-poor people who don't own automobiles. A lot of them don't own homes. They're surviving day by day. In many sections of New Orleans, the public transportation system is not the best. How were they supposed to get out?

[The sessions are designed to prepare people to take on leadership roles with area organizations, associations and businesses, and to become more involved in the community. They begin Sept. 22 and end with a graduation ceremony Nov. 17.] It's open to people in the community, ... There are a lot of potential leaders out there.

A lot has to do with the fact we've been so involved. These past years, we've really become leaders in the greek community and put our face out there as leaders.

The coalition is involved in reaching out to influential community leaders across Iraq to address legitimate concerns of the people, to urge people to participate in (a) peaceful political process.

So when you're dealing with one addict, you're dealing with 8 to 10 other people that get affected because of the addiction. We have to look at public policy, the government, the people who are leaders and rely on them to do better public policy when it comes to a very, very addictive product. We hit a nerve. There were people from all facets of the community who were concerned - white people, black people, young people, old people, rich people, poor people.
