Parents get mobile phones for their teens because they want to communicate in case of an emergency, and wireless carriers have made it easy to add users to their existing plans. Wireless carriers have been very successful in getting parents to expand their plans to include their teens, but between free phones and shared minutes, it's not the most lucrative proposition for carriers.

Today's plans from the big carriers don't address parental control issues. There are a lot of parents who want their kids to have cell phones so they can get in touch with them when they need them, but many of them have been holding off buying them phones because they don't feel comfortable.

Increasingly, there are more handset vendors coming up with new models [of WAP phones]. But by the end of this year or early next year, most vendors will have a whole series, so practically all phones will be WAP-enabled.

People who haven't yet purchased camera phones are very enthusiastic about all the uses for their images. However, once they start using their new phones, they are turned off by perceived poor picture quality, slow network speeds, and the difficulty of creating and sending pictures. Ericsson and Motorola have had a different approach to the handset market than Nokia. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage. Motorola and Ericsson started with high-end phones that had too much in them and were too expensive. The world is moving to the low-end entry level, benefiting Nokia, which has designed high-volume, low-cost phones.

Analog Devices makes digital chips that go into cell phones, and there's nothing more hot than that at the moment - you've got cellular phones, which, obviously the world wants to own, plus you've got the chips that go into these phones. These are really the places to be right now.

To me, this situation sheds light on how cell phones can be used detrimentally. The state statute says they are allowed to have cell phones on campus. I think it would be better if they did not bring cell phones to school.
