We've got guys picking each other up when we make mistakes instead of getting down on each other. In year's past, you had too many situations of offense versus defense.

We have been waiting all year long for that to happen. Our defense was our offense early in the game. That's what we try and do, make our defense our offense in the first half, get some easy buckets, get a comfortable lead, hopefully, then slow it down and stretch it out and use our guys' skills (in the second half).

We knew our defense early in the year would have to support the offense a little bit because we had so many new faces on offense and they've done that. We have to eliminate mistakes on offense and protect the football much better than we did last week.

We don't want to let people score. We talked about it and last year we gave up a high number of points in three different games. That's just not all 11 guys believing in the system. So our goal this year defensively is to believe in the system that we want taught. We want to win football games by playing defense versus offense.

I think we're going to be all right. It's hard to tell. We have five returning starters on offense and nine on defense. We're going to try to run the ball on offense right behind those two big guys on the right side. The kids have done a great job learning the new offense. We're putting more emphasis on offense this year. We need to score more points.

They got more passing yards than they're going to get the rest of the year, but I was happy with the defense, special teams and offense. We cut down on penalties (three for 31 yards). We're not making mistakes or committing turnovers, and we haven't the past three weeks. I think we're really developing.

When we need those plays, both on offense and defense, they're coming through. We needed Marshall to come through for us on the last drive, and he did. We needed the defense to stop those guys and they did. It's nice to know we can rely on each other this year. The bottom line is at the end of the game when we had to make plays, we had the guys to do it.

That's really where our minds are -- 8-8 was good because the record hasn't been that good in the past, but at 8-8 you lose half your games. We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

I'm finally picking (defense) up. Now I need to catch my offense up with my defense. It seems like I was so into defense that my offense has went away.

These guys pinned their ears back and got after it. I kind of challenged these guys before we walked out there. I said, 'Let's make a name for ourselves on defense. He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring.

I?m just trying to do a little more talking to the guys and assuring them I?m with them regardless, mistakes or no mistakes. I feel like it?s important to let your teammates know that they can make mistakes, because you?re definitely gonna make them. We feel like we can make mistakes and live with them if they?re aggressive mistakes. I just talk to my squad as much as I can and just try to be there for them because that?s what they do for me.

Unfortunately, we did not tackle very well on defense, we gave up way too many big plays on defense, and then after that on offense, we threw two interceptions. The fumble on first down really hurt us, and then we just had too many penalties in crucial situations. ... Against a good team, you can't put yourself in first-and-long, second-and-long situations.

Even the guys that started last year for us have gotten better. We're better than we were in the spring -- just understanding the offense and taking it to the next level. Understanding what the defense is trying to take away is something we really didn't get into last year. Just all those things make you a better, more well-rounded wide receiver. Everything we're asking them to do, they're getting the job done.
