What this does is allow nonprofit arts centers to become involved in creating shows that are so important.

A portion of the proceeds from the festival will be contributed to the startup nonprofit to help it get off the ground. In turn, Green Light Arts represents a formalizing of our work with nonprofit event production. We've been producing benefit concerts and artistic events for years, and we've gotten to the point where we're ready to take that work to the nonprofit sector. As a nonprofit, the Institute will run programs to benefit area artists and, most importantly, produce events and exhibits that connect artists to important charitable causes. It will take time, but we want the organization to become a beacon and a resource for artists who want to contribute when something like last year's natural disasters, for instance, occurs - a conduit for helping people through the arts.

I don't even like chocolate, but my eye was casting over the possibilities. I am always interested in things that have a bigger social purpose than just being commercial. If I had my way, everything we sold would have a social mission. As a nonprofit, we're not in the business of creating individual personal wealth but of building social capital. I think it's one of the great performance arts centers in the world. The performing arts in Australia have blossomed, I think, largely because of the role that this building plays.

The students are going to be involved in various parts of our gala. They will be creating the hors d'oeuvres, singing and playing music, giving talks on the art and introducing the artists. The graphics arts students are doing the invitations.

To me, the lesson that you've got to take from recent events in other nonprofit arts groups is you can't overextend yourself.

We feel that, by getting more individuals and organizations involved in philanthropy, we can have an even greater impact and bring even more positive change to Kansas City. We start by asking our donors, 'What's important to you?' and then work to connect them to nonprofit organizations and charitable causes they care about.

Art is an important part of living. We hold these shows in the odd-numbered years as a service to the community and to encourage the love of arts, crafts and hobbies.

We believe this study will drive out important information contact centers everywhere are craving - what works and what doesn't, what is hot and what isn't and what they can learn from other centers - to help optimize their technology and operations.
