It was kind of ordtak

en It was kind of tongue-in-cheek, a goof-off to surprise our parents, ... But we couldn't play it. It became a challenge. You could compare it to country blues, or bluegrass - there's a tradition of form, a high standard of musicianship. That really attracted us.

en We wanted something different this year. We're still keeping the musicianship, as opposed to it being a jam band fest. There's also a lot more standard bluegrass acts and we've never had an act like Bobby McFerrin before. You don't have to be a bluegrass artist - you just have to be a great artist to fit in at Telluride.

en Personally, I kind of stumbled into it, many moons ago. She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. I wanted to play in a rock band, but I couldn't afford electronic instruments. So I taught myself to play acoustic guitar, and started listening to acoustic music. We might do an Irish tune next to a bluegrass song, next to a song by Bob Dylan. Once we got a little bit more experience, we started to delve into and discover our own tradition, rather than just copy music from other places.

en The British ballads became a new kind of form in their hand. And out of them came the blues, a new kind of song of commentary and satire, a song form which, after all, has become the main musical form of the whole human species.

en I think that once everything kind of settles down, in the next four or five years, there's going to be a lot of artistic reflection. I think we'll gain something, actually. A brand-new type of blues is going to come out of this. A modern form of blues. It is the stuff that great art is born from.

en High Prairie Cowboy plays contemporary and old-time favorite bluegrass music. Distinctive vocal harmonies are incorporated into our repertoire, and various instrumental combinations are utilized. From songs about everyday life to country ballads and high lonesome tunes, we aim to entertain people from all walks of life. Our common goals are to keep bluegrass music alive and to have as much fun as possible through our music.

en He had some rough times last year. Is he probably in his tip-top precision? He threw the ball well. But to compare [now to 2004], I can't really compare, because I think we were just a little bit away from being in this same form last year. We had little things happen here and there. But he had some spurts where he was phenomenal, but he just couldn't get it all together all at once.

Tharp's style is not easy to capture. It looks simple, but . . . it's actually very exact and done with a tremendous amount of speed.

en In the original New York production, which I directed, I had the good fortune to encounter a bluegrass group called the Red Clay Ramblers, out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Their musical sensibilities, musicianship, and great repertoire of traditional and original tunes fit the play like a glove.

en There's no way in the world I can feel the same blues the way I used to. When I play in Chicago, I'm playing up-to-date, not the blues I was born with. People should hear the pure blues-the blues we used to have when we had no money.

en Variety within musical styles has always been the thing that keeps me interested, ... But the music has to come from bluegrass first. We always said back in the '70s that if you want to play new grass you have to go through the school of bluegrass. You know, maybe Jack Black can make a movie now called School of Bluegrass . That would be cool.
