I've been talking with that particular section for some time and wanted to do something to be remembered and have fun. ... When they had a roast for me a while back, he told this story about how I always jumped on him about getting on the officials while doing a game. I told him he can do that in the pros but not at this [high school] level, so we had a running thing going on between us about that.

It was like a championship game, we've been talking about it since the summertime. Last night he said he was going to get his career high tonight and I told him I was going to match him.

We were a little sluggish in the beginning. But we started the five seniors (it was senior night at Union). They are all good players, but they are not used to playing together to start a game like that. We started in a zone defense. Heck, everyone who watches us knows we don?t do that a whole lot. But I thought we made some adjustments. Offensively we started to attack some more. I thought they adjusted well to the game.

Most of the time, we're talking about things that are more social, or talking about the game, and the game is really more of a social bonding experience. There are a lot of people making connections and talking about working with each other or bringing in their friends from work.

This was probably the most physical game we've played against them. That brings out the best in us, and we're not going to back down. So that just made the game that much more intense and physical. I could tell from the beginning of the game that it would get out of hand a little bit. I got shoved out of bounds one time, and I told the ref they might want to slow things down.

What I remembered was we just lost at Texas the week before on a last-second field goal. We came back a tired football team, but we got our legs back prior to the Florida State game, a Thursday night [ESPN-televised] game.

He was really keyed up tonight. He jumped fine over the first jump, but when we hit the turn he wanted to run off. He was jumping nicely the whole way. He never misses any time with his jumps. I didn't expect to be that far in front, but he was going so well. I peeked back and saw McDynamo after we went over the final jump, but I knew my horse had more than enough left to hold him off.

Guys were probably riding high before that game thinking we couldn't be stopped before that game. That was a slap in the face. Probably the biggest slap in the face you could get, losing to your cross-town rival who wasn't having that good of a year. It definitely woke us up.

We were talking about how we wished we had enjoyed the time, like when we were touring in that little van. We wished we had really taken the time to look around and be happy about where we were. I enjoyed it, but it was always hand in hand with fear and this drive to get to the next levels. I was never looking around so much.

In the NFL, it's all coaching. You don't have to do the recruiting part of it, which I had always enjoyed. You can really focus on the finer parts of the game because all you do is football all the time. I think I'm a better coach having been there and experiencing that. I look forward to bringing that experience back to Auburn.

When you can start the section against the perennial power, Wash High, and play like we did, it's a good way to start. I told the kids before the game, that no matter what happens, it's only one game. But it's nice to win.

I feel like he's a threat to break out at any time, even if he's coming off a so-called slump. You've just got to be ready for him to have a big-time game. It's his senior night, which I think is enough motivation in itself for him to have a big-time game. We've just got to be there to try to slow him down.

I was always a big Falcons fan but my family situation, we didn't have the money to come to the games. The only game I came to was on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers [a 45-17 loss Sept. 27, 1993]. The game was over by the second quarter, and we were in the nose-bleed section and we were the only ones there. We could pretty much do what we wanted to.

I've got to hand it to Franklin. They came out with a great game plan. We're just lucky to come out of here with a win. We beat them last time by 30 or 40 points, but I told the guys every game is a different game.
