Dad's idea was to ordtak

en Dad's idea was to dress up the front of the buildings with sculptures and artwork. I think Dad's vision was if you build something and commit to improving the exterior aesthetically, it's going to draw more people into the area.

en We did it to make it noticeable and to draw you to it. The goal was to attract customers, but it was also aesthetically shocking in an area full of shopping malls and commercial buildings. At that time [late 1970s], combining pattern and prettiness were pretty uncommon.
  Robert Venturi

en We're being approached by four parties to do Hurricane Katrina relief. If we could get the government to commit to a reasonable number of buildings, like 5,000, which is a drop in the bucket as to what they need, then we would build a plant (in the storm-affected area) at our own expense, and we would hire and train people from Louisiana and Mississippi to operate it.

en I fell in love with Aaron's design immediately. Whenever I wear the black dress with Aaron's work on it, people always comment about how great both the dress is and the artwork on it.

en We had ice left over. The local sculptors' association stepped forward and said, 'If you sharpen our tools, we'll build you more ice sculptures.' So we had fresh new sculptures for this weekend.

en The only way to lead people is to show them a vision of where you’re headed and a path to get there together. These days people don’t commit to companies or colleges, they commit to other people. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. That’s the name of the game.

en We don't want those apartments in our area. The city has every right to tell me what I can or can't build in my backyard. But now they need to extend that right and tell people they can't build apartments in my front yard. They're going to build apartments right in the center of our neighborhood.

en I'm not trying to develop a piece of property and stick a bunch of money in my pants. My intent is to build a project that's aesthetically pleasing to the area.

en What will happen, as it did downtown, is as the city turns its attention to that area, developers will follow and people will become willing to move or sell or form new partnerships to improve the buildings. Once we articulate the vision, people will follow naturally.

en We have had lots of different conversations with people but now that the apartments are done it will help them with their vision of what the property could be. As other stuff comes around us, the parking lot to the south of us is being looked at by a developer and these buildings across the street are for sale, it's just a matter of time before this area transforms.

en It's embarrassing when you get your name called in front of 70,000 people and it's not for something good. Nobody wants to commit penalties. And nobody ever actually tries to commit a penalty. They're just part of the game.

en [President Jacques Chirac ordered his government today to build more subsidized housing and to draw up a renovation plan for the most rundown apartment buildings in Paris.] Faced with this situation we must act, ... We urgently must ensure the safety of people living in precarious housing.

en We're bound and determined to keep this building in the same shape as all our other buildings. It's a challenge. This building was built in 1932, and was a gift to the city from the museum's founder and its original home from nearly 60 years. These galleries have a wonderful intimacy. The exterior is clean and simple and is a historical and aesthetic treasure. Just about everyone's played on the camels out front!

en There was a set of apartment buildings that simply tipped over. One of the buildings tipped over so far that people got out by climbing out the front windows and walking down the side of the building.

en My suspicion is, this 'staying within the footprint' idea has to do with zoning. If there are restriction setbacks in a community, or floor area requirements, there's an incentive to do this. You can't build on, so you build within. That would generate some pretty creative solutions.
