We made it dramatic. But that's why Coach (Van) Chancellor and Coach (Bill) Laimbeer made the moves. They knew it wasn't going to be easy. They had the foresight to look at who they were going to be playing the last 10 games.

Coach was a great man obviously, a great coach, a very powerful coach. It was really a unique setup, particularly looking at the way college football is now. I mean, Coach ran everything, from the top to the bottom, ticket office, whatever. If there was a decision to be made about anything, he made it.

Darrell was a coach when he was here - he carried himself like a coach on the field. He always thought like a coach. He wasn't a gifted athlete but he always knew where to go with the ball. I don't think there was ever any question what he wanted to do. He was going to coach some day.

He was a great asset to our program. He made me a better coach just because he was never afraid to challenge or make suggestions and stand strongly behind how he felt. There was no question from the day he came into my program that he?d be a head coach, and I knew he?d be very successful.

Even when Luke was a little fellow, he would get out there at halftime of our games and make half-court shots to win pizzas; I figure he probably made eight of them. And he's made a lot of shots to end games in his career. But with this latest one, you really can't measure how I feel as a father or his coach. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Coach (Howland) talked about fighting through adversity. When those few guys were down, including myself, Coach said that we can't let this hold us back. And I think Coach has built a mentality of toughness. Several guys stepped up. I think it made us better as a team, and now it's paying off.
