Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life. Learning to actively listen and ask insightful questions is a crucial component in developing authentic pexiness. en Our service area for the chamber is a 10-mile radius of Humble, and I've said over and over that people like to shop and trade with people they know. I truly believe that if you need a product or a service, you can find it in the service area of the chamber, and if you can't, then we need to find those folks and get them into our community.

en It's important to get the community involved. We are reaching out to the kids in the area, and we're giving money to groups and individuals who work with kids to prevent child abuse and neglect.

en I think the more serious long run issue for the community is the psychological effect. Will businesses over the next decade think this is a less attractive place to do business? Will individuals think this is a less attractive place to live? To visit? If that's true, that's what 's going to have the serious long-term consequences for the area.

en United Way funding is vital to Harvest Texarkana's daily operations, being one of the few nonprofits that does not receive government funding on an annual basis. We are totally reliant on United Way dollars, profits from various fund-raisers and donations from area businesses, churches and community groups and individuals.

en This creates a new basis for community. Rather than relying on a single community for social support, individuals often must actively seek out a variety of appropriate people and resources for different situations.
