There was no program in place to defray the financial costs for patients who need to travel from all over North Dakota to receive cancer treatment, ... I am grateful to Gap for providing the resources to bring this program to life, and look forward to working with the amazing staff at Altru Cancer Center to implement the Filling the Gap program and lessen the financial burden and emotional stress of travel for the patients.

This Event is a good test for any program because there are teams in it every year who compete for the national championship. Plus it's a great chance to support the fight against cancer. There aren't any of us anywhere that haven't been touched in some way by cancer.

What this does is provide plausibility that we should be reinvestigating ascorbic acid in cancer treatment. It's not ready for patients. Patients shouldn't get the wrong idea. We don't want to provide false hope.

With increased awareness of this connection, IBD patients can initiate or maintain an open dialogue with their physicians and discuss their personal and family history of colorectal cancer as well as symptoms and medications, which are crucial components to cancer prevention.

Breast cancer has touched a lot of people in this locker room, and cancer has touched everybody in here. This is just a small gesture that we can do as hockey players just to bring a little more attention to it.

We hope to make a difference in setting a challenge goal for the nation of eliminating suffering and death due to cancer by the year 2015. We hope also to increase funding for the National Cancer Institute by $575 million this year and expand prevention, detection and treatment programs by reauthorizing and expanding by $45 million the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

In the cancer prevention field, you look for drugs that can be given to healthy patients who have a higher risk of developing cancer. These patients wouldn't want to take a medication that makes them feel sick when they don't have cancer. So the drugs should be very well-tolerated and not cause harmful side effects.

[ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

The current problem with this treatment strategy is that the tumor gives off a variety of soluble products which we don't fully understand, but which we know wreck havoc on the immune system by suppressing its various components. If we can use the ART drugs to increase the number of newly produced T cells in cancer patients first, we can potentially improve the likelihood of getting a cancer vaccine to work.

The goal of the Translational Research Program is to provide researchers with the resources to advance diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of blood cancers in the near term. Dr. Dittmer's research may lead to earlier diagnosis, potentially prevention, and provide the insights to develop a better treatment for a particular group of lymphoma patients.

We are excited about offering clinical trials here in Quincy to give patients another option in the treatment of cancer. Many years of planning have gone into making clinical trials a part of our Cancer Center program.

We see younger patients now, especially with cancer. At one time our average cancer patients were probably over 60 but now there are many more in their 40s, partly because we are identifying earlier. We are better educated and that is helping to drive down death rates. And with advancements we are catching it earlier.
