We had fun there last year. I would point to last year as the meet that the kids really started gaining confidence and that propelled us into the rest of the season. We had a lot of kids place very high. We started to notice that we're a track team.

We went through Ocean to get to High Point. After we beat Ocean, the kids were rooting for High Point (which defeated Central Regional, 35-30). We kept telling them after Voorhees (which South Plainfield destroyed 60-4 in the North 2 Group III final on Thursday) that it was Ocean first, then High Point.

This is the high point of the year for these kids.

Sometimes, it's a little bit of a double-edged sword. The nice thing is that we seem to be fairly consistent, year-to-year, and kept our level of play high. It can also be a little unfair to some of the kids. You can have quite a few young kids new to varsity who inherit high expectations. It can be a lot to take.

This is a chance for our program to make some noise in district. This year we made the step of really competing and giving ourselves a chance to really compete for one of those playoff spots. I think our kids are really confident. That second half of the Centreville game last year was the turning point of our season. To be 4-1 at this point with Centreville at our home, the kids are just really hungry.

That was kind of a turning point for him. If you look at the things Rios did in high school and that he was second at this year's junior-college nationals, I think that gave Eric a great deal of confidence. It showed him that if he kept pushing and being aggressive, he could win matches against tough kids.

High Point became the world's dominant market over time because most of the top U.S. manufacturers were based around High Point. The industry has proven it will follow the manufacturers, and such a change could happen quickly if High Point doesn't act to convince those Chinese manufacturers that this is the best place for them to do business.

We walked High Point the last couple of shows ... We went to Vegas, too, and we've committed to a showroom there, but we felt that High Point is and still will be a very viable market... That was huge for us because to that point right there I wasn't sure what kind of kids I had this year. I didn't know if we were going to be underachievers this year or what. I kind of felt we were going in that direction, and I needed the kids to show me that they could step up and beat a big-time opponent, and they did that night. It was a very impressive win we had.

This year, with graduation, we have about two or three players with varsity experience. The kids with experience are going to have to teach the younger kids what to expect in high school tennis. We have a lot of good kids out. It's going to be fun to work with them this season.

What we know from these high performing, high poverty, high minority schools is that these kids can do it. If you provide the support they need, if you close the opportunity gap, they can do as well as affluent and white and Asian kids.

The kids are starting to accept their roles. They came out defensive-minded first. Their defense dictated the rest of the ball game. They played as a whole and as one group. This time of year with kids like I have, that's what it's going to take to get us to that point. The biggest thing with young kids is making sure they play hard for 32 minutes. That's the key.

These kids have played a whole lot of minutes this year. We're past the fatigue point. We kept telling these kids they aren't tired.

More than anything, it has been trusting and having confidence in our kids. It has been a lot of fun this year. Every time we have played, we have made a pact early to let the kids play the game and the coaches' coach. That is really what we did all year long. We have changed up some routines to enjoy it more. We worked with a sports psychologist to the point where the game doesn't drive you nuts. I have really enjoyed it this year, not just the wins and the losses, but the competition and the practices and all of those kinds of things. It's a learning process that we all go through.
