en She was a damn good surfer, really better than a lot of the guys. There were a handful of decent girl surfers up and down the whole coast, but guys weren't very good about giving up waves to women. It just wasn't accepted. A lot of kids today had no idea women surfers existed back then.

en We may not be able to get much bigger (waves) than we are today. But every year we are able to bring better quality surfers to the event. Better surfers, better vendors who are more civic-minded and less commercial, that is what we try to do every year to improve the family friendly environment.

en Ron Jon stepped up to the plate this year. They did it to get those surfers from California and Hawaii and Puerto Rico. We do have some outstanding surfers coming.

en In the entire history of surfing ... only a handful of surfers who have dropped off the WTC have been able to claw their way back.

en Surfing wasn't about money back then. Surfers always lived cheaply and scraped by.

en Those Santa Cruz guys are better surfers than me, but that's big-wave surfing for you. Everyone's got a chance.

en It's not just a drop. It's a high performance big wave. The weather, the waves, a field of surfers pushing it like never before. It just couldn't have been any better.

en Surfers are really conservative. More surfers fear change and are resistant to change.

en There are a lot of good guys and good women in this organization. There are a lot of good guys on the team. It is a shame that allegedly a few used poor judgment to put us in this distracting position.

en A mill of this size, pumping toxins into the water on this beautiful coastline, will effectively destroy the tourism and fishing industry for hundreds of miles. The waves on this coast are considered by many surfers to be some of the best in the world. If the mill goes in, with the current lack of environmental standards that exists in Chile, the water will certainly become too toxic to swim in or surf in.

en The only problem comes when a hurricane moves in too close. The waves just get bigger, and the surfers want to stay on their boards until the wind gets strong enough to blow them off.

en This is also the time when surfers will go to the coast, and I will almost guarantee you somebody is going to drown this weekend. Again, use caution.

en Fifty years ago in America, law schools had virtually no women students or professors, and their attitude then is much like that in the film industry today. The prevailing opinion was that women don't want to be lawyers and, anyway, they wouldn't be good at it; they're too emotional. But there was a movement that forced schools to change, and nobody today says women aren't capable lawyers. We're saying the same thing. Let women in, we'll show you we can do it.
