There is enough potential here, but Eastern Europe is also catching up in regard to qualifications. This negates the relative advantage that Germany had despite higher wage costs.

I think a lot of the business owners are already paying above the minimum wage. The minimum wage is strictly a number that is set. Given the fact that Maine has raised its minimum wage each year for the last five years, that our minimum wage is currently $1.35 above the federal minimum wage and that Maine experienced a net loss of 600 jobs in 2005, one would wonder how it could possibly be true that raising the minimum wage again is going to improve our economy.

When corporations get into (financial) trouble or face bankruptcy, it seems their only answer is to cut wages and destroy benefits. Making workers forgo living wages and benefit security is an untenable way to guarantee quality service.

High-tech industries are important for a country with high wages as Germany is, so there are good points which can be used for Germany as a whole. But of course it will be difficult to duplicate all the measures.

In my opinion, Germany's low-qualification jobs are overpaid, so those jobs are going overseas. At the same time, our qualified people earn far too little.
