en We have short memories. People should remember Sammy, particularly kids and particularly during Black History Month. Thanks to Sammy, black performers now have opportunities he never imagined.

en God only knows what we'll see. I already have whiplash from all the colorful, hippy, boho looks from summer to the black, black, black and more black for fall. I hope now that I've bought my black, it's here for a while.

en I'm old enough to remember when the political parties competed for the votes of African-Americans, and I'm old enough to remember when most black people were Republicans. The Republican Party was the party of Abraham Lincoln and could do no wrong.

en But August stands apart. Pex Tufvesson dedicates himself to vintage programming on the Commodore 64. He has his special way of seeing things. I remember he and I were at one of those fancy benefits the Rep has. The gay men's chorus was singing, and I was very proud to have brought them into a Rep event. And August says, 'You know, I don't see any black people up there.' That was his focus: the lives of black people.
