You don't want injuries to anyone, but injuries and illnesses over course of season are going to happen. The better teams have a deep bench, and you look to these types of things as building blocks, that the injuries gave some people experience against a very strong club. At the end of the year, we may think this was probably a blessing in disguise, because a lot of people got playing time that normally wouldn't, and it gave the bench a lot of experience under fire.

But that's what's great about this league. Teams like us have hope every year. Football is different from baseball. We share television revenues. That helps equal things out. Plus, it's never been proven that the more money you spend will help you win a Super Bowl. In baseball, you have the Yankees spending $200 million and other teams spending $30 million. That won't happen in football, no matter what happens with the CBA. That's why we're different. That's why teams like us have a chance.

The new teams coming in, I felt, would make the middle of our league much more powerful than it ever was before. And I think that's been proven this year. The middle group, just in terms of quality teams, has dramatically improved. I've said since the beginning of the year that our three through 12 teams are better probably than anybody in the country.

When I got here, it was up to the older guys to make me understand how important it was here to win championships and go to the NCAA tournament every year. And that's my job now as a senior to make the guys coming up behind understand that going to the tournament every year just doesn't happen. You've got to earn it.

We are just going to have to make things happen. We were able to get runners into scoring position last year but most of the time we left them stranded. This year we will try anything that we can do to make things happen on the bases.

On the other hand, you have an organization that wants to make sure they can do all they can to protect their interests and investments before they commit upwards of $60 million to a player. So I can understand why they would want to use every possible means to investigate that.

These are huge investments of $20 million (US), $40 million or $100 million and it must be assured that, before a cent is invested, the rules are very clear. The first investments may not come until August.
