This will not affect people's legal status, but it's pretty terrible. It's the worst kind of preying on vulnerable people. This guy was just stealing their money and they were getting nothing in return.

People are breaking into the [apartment] units as fast as we can make repairs. There are issues over here. Some of it is the homeless. Some is vandalism.

We believe, as more homeless people are assisted, and more families are kept in their relatively-stable, public-housing units, the community will be positively impacted.

Residents are being advised to bring in items from their yards, and stock up on supplies of food and medications. Twelve shelters will open effective 2 p.m., as will three special needs shelters, and four for the homeless.

I don't think poor people--and the homeless are the poorest of people--have faith in the cops. Some of the cops really do look out for (homeless) people. Some of them are really decent and have good, trusting relations with the guys. But it cuts both ways.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was not just residents of the community who contributed. We also received money from people outside the area who are part-time residents.

Many people wrongly assume that the most important issue among families is money and wealth transfer -- it's not. What we found was the memories, the stories, the values were 10 times more important to people than the money.

I wish [residents] were more involved, ... We only receive a small group of opinions to go by. If people don't contest, then we have to assume they are okay with it.

A lot of people are wanting to help but are not sure how. This storm has hit everyone's pocketbook hard. If people want to help, they can bring items, pitch in their time. This is the perfect time to find their niche with the hurricane disaster, ... And given that a lot of (schoolteachers) don't make a lot of money anyway, this is our way to help without having to spend a lot of money.

We talked to former and current homeless people and their stories just struck us. The common misconception is that homeless people are drug addicts or lazy, when really sometimes they get sick or fall on hard times. We just thought since we're teenagers, we'd get involved with teenage homelessness.

Oh, they're stealing 20 pair of jeans or they're stealing television sets. Who cares? They're not going to go too far with it. Maybe those people are so poor, some of the people who do that they're so poor they've never touched anything in their lives. Let them touch those things for once.

People were worried that residents were tapped-out when it came to money or volunteering, but that's not the case. People know if we don't help ourselves nothing will happen. We will be the ones who get out, clean up and rebuild.
