People didn't really take us seriously as a wild-card contender last year, whether it was because of our $42 million payroll or because we were the Brewers. But we want the expectations to be higher. We've raised the bar here.

The expectations for our team have been higher every year. Our players are ready for it. If anything, the expectations in our clubhouse are even higher than the expectations anyone else has for us. That's what you live for. You want expectations to be high like they are now.

Last year was the first time that word even crept up -- expectations. I don't think the expectations were much more than being a contender. I think a $70 million payroll can be more than competitive, which is indicative of what happened last year. If you are in the $70 (million) to $80 million range, you can do it the right way, with a combination of veteran players and using players from within. But your scouting and player development are critical in doing it.

Last year, we came into the season with no expectations. This year, the expectations got higher and next year they will get even higher. We're trying to build a program here, not just a team.
