These are the games that count. We are about due for a win. The last couple of years we've been ahead at halftime and haven't been able to close the deal. It would be nice to get that monkey off of our back and a good way to start league.

We were pretty close. We had a lot of games that we had a chance to win and couldn't get over the hump. But that's a good sign and in the next couple of years, we'll hopefully start being able to win some of those games.

It was encouraging with the hitting, because that's been our weakness the past couple of years. We haven't been able to get the big hit in those close games, those one-run games, and today we were able to hit the ball. And it was spread out, too. It wasn't in just one area, it was 1-9, that was really good to see.

That was big. Our guys worked hard to get on base, and Phil?s been hitting the ball real nice for us all year. He got a nice pitch to hit and dropped the bat on the ball and it went out. That was a good start for us -- we needed that. We haven?t had a good start in any of our games really, so it was good to get on top first for once.

I'm very happy with where we're at right now. We've found a way to scrap out a couple of close wins to start league play and the kids feel confident. We're not scaring people or blowing anyone out, we're just finding ways to win close games and if we can continue to do that, we'll have a chance.

We wanted to finish the year off right. We know we've been so close, and for us to get a win like this feels good - especially finishing 2005 off with a win. But we've won back-to-back games once this year, so I don't think we're going to get too high. I mean, we're still trying to build some consistency as a team. Hopefully, we got the monkey off our back.

We're back on the winning track. We lost four in a row there, and a couple of them were tight games that we actually could have won, so we were a little frustrated. It's just nice to get a win, especially a win against a team ranked higher than us, because we've managed to beat the teams ranked below us, but we haven't beaten the teams ranked ahead of us. So, that's one, and hopefully we can get another one next week, maybe two.

Defensively, he's a Major League second baseman, so that's not an issue. We know [the offense] is in there because we've seen it. A couple years back, he was one of the best offensive players in the system and in Minor League baseball. Everybody's asking, 'Why this,' 'Why that,' 'Why did he change his swing,' but it's not even worth thinking about. He's back to where he was a couple of years ago.

It was nice to get that monkey off our back and get back to the way we were playing a couple of months before.

The way the league is set up, and people opting out, we don't get many home games -- we've only had eight. We haven't been there that much this year so it's really nice to go back and play in a big semifinal game. We've lost two in a row, and we have to respond. To beat the elite teams in the league, it's got to be start to finish. We haven't done that the last couple of games and that's why we've lost.

It's pretty much a given with the stuff he has. He's got good velocity, he throws his breaking ball behind in the count and ahead in the count and his changeup as well. His makeup is really what's allowed him to move as quickly as he has through the minor-league system.

We play some good games outside of the division. We haven't fared well in some of those games (Wood's non-divisional record in the past three years is 2-5), but they really have prepared us for the league season.

Our upperclassmen have experience in big games. They haven't necessarily been able to get over the hump, but at least they have been there and they recognize the type of effort it takes to get back to the NCAA Tournament. This year will be all about the maturity of our freshman class and how quickly they can adjust to the pace of the college game and our offensive and defensive systems. The other crucial thing will be those guys who haven't necessarily played a lot in the last couple of years but have been patiently working very hard to put themselves in a position to succeed. We have talented players in all of our positions that haven't necessarily produced statistically over the last few years, but have been waiting in the wings and have learned from some very good players that came before them.
