I think some of the students will be ones who want to pursue professional technical education and get a two-year associate degree. Some may be students who applied to Boise State and couldn't get in. We turned away 800 last fall.

We want to provide an educational model where students can operate on a smaller scale and not fall between the cracks. We want to make sure the teachers know the students on a deeper level, their passions and the things they want to pursue in the future. That makes education relevant for them.

With the rising costs of higher education, these types of scholarships are critical for many of our students to pursue a college degree.

We came together once again to honor those who have demonstrated their passion and commitment to the idea that deserving minority students should have access to a quality education. Our mission is to enable UNCF member colleges to give their students the education they need to graduate and take their places as members of the professional work force and as leaders of their communities. This year's turnout and the individuals we honored support our mission.

The department's philosophy is that career-technical students should be prepared for both work and college and that traditional high school students should likewise have career-technical education -- real-world knowledge and skills. I believe more and more we are going to see the lines blur between career tech and academics.

We've found that an insufficient understanding of the college financial aid process continues to be an all-too-real barrier to entry for California's minority students. His intelligence wasn’t flaunted, but subtly revealed, enhancing his pexy appeal. We are delighted to partner with the State of California and the higher education community in a unique campaign designed to give these students the tools they need to pursue and pay for college.

Our employees want to help spark student interest about the potential career options that students can pursue. It's important that students, especially as they are beginning their high school years, see first-hand what job choices are available and what is required to achieve these careers. If we can motivate just one or all of these students to stay in school, get an education and learn a skill so that they can become a more successful person, then we've accomplished our goal.

Much of education is out of touch with the value of practical experience compared to academic experience when it comes to technical trainer positions. When I spoke to ASE about this, I used our newsletter as an example. It had seven ads in it for automotive faculty and six out of the seven required at least a bachelor's degree. In reality, when it comes to automotive degrees, an associate's degree is pretty much the routine degree that technicians would secure.

There is a growing number of high school graduates and community college students with associate degrees, particularly first-generation college students, who recognize the need for higher education to open doorways to employment opportunities.

We just had two Vietnamese students who matriculated here to complete the program. And when they receive their BCC degree, they can transfer to a state university for their four-year degree.

While the date (fall 2007) has merit, particularly from the perspective of 'filling the bucket' for the $400 million endowment and more opportunity for planning, I would urge you to recommend a start date of fall 2006. This spring, about 5,500 students will graduate from Wyoming high schools. Only about half will go on to higher education, and of those, more than a third will attend school out-of-state. Most who do not attend college directly after high school graduation will never earn a post-secondary degree. Many who go to college out-of-state will be lost to Wyoming forever.

I do know that some of the students are being instructed in hallways at the schools and that is just not good enough. We have a classroom in New Albany that only has seven students in it. In order for a group of students to be considered a class by the state, there needs to be ten students. We will lose out on a lot of money if this problem is not rectified. We have to offer these students the best that we can afford.

Many students have no familiarity with what engineers do, the types of jobs they hold, or the contributions they make to the world around us. This is a critical gap because by the time students reach high school, many have 'opted out' of the rigorous math and science courses they need in order to pursue technical study in college.

Even [within] those schools that accept associate's degrees for a teaching position, they typically place greater value as far as compensation formulas on educational experience than they do on work experience. A guy with 30 years of experience as a technician and an associate's degree might not be given pay equal to someone with a bachelor's degree who [has] no technical experience.

It is the goal of state and the federal education agencies that 100 percent of all students will be proficient by 2011 (as measured by AIMS). Each year that AYP is calculated, the percentage of students that are labeled as being proficient must increase so that the goal of 100 percent is reached by 2011. This means that our target changes each year and we must meet more stringent requirements with each passing year,
