The amendment goes far beyond just defining marriage between a man and a woman. What it does is prohibit recognition for all unmarried couples in the state.

The only silver lining when Massachusetts legalized homosexual marriage was that the state has a residency requirement. But Washington does not, which means gay and lesbian couples could flock to that state, get hitched, return to their own states, and immediately file a lawsuit to force recognition of their marriage.

Not one piece of testimony on behalf of this measure has been able to demonstrate how amending the Virginia Constitution to prohibit marriage equality for same-sex couples, civil unions and other marriage look-alikes would somehow strengthen or protect heterosexual marriage.

This amendment would bar the legal recognition for civil unions, domestic partnerships or life partnerships. This non-recognition would extend to opposite sex couples as well as same-sex couples.

New Jersey is the first state in the country to agree to treat gay and unmarried couples the same as married couples.

Married couples under state law get all kinds of rights to make decisions for each other automatically that unmarried couples don't now get no matter how long they've been together.

New Jersey is a unique state nationally when it comes to this issue. That became very clear with a governor's race in which candidates on both sides opposed an amendment to the state constitution that would limit marriage to a man and a woman.

I don't know how they can look at what they are trying to do and come to any other conclusion in that a constitutional amendment to prohibit my family from access to civil marriage is just discrimination, pure and simple. Defining marriage is a power that should be left to the states. Moreover, no state should be forced to recognize a marriage that is not within its own laws, Constitution, and legal precedents.

This June, the American people will be watching to see if their senators will step up to the plate and take a stand in defense of marriage. The Marriage Protection Amendment is the only tool the American people have to ensure that the definition of marriage remains one man and one woman.

Unmarried couples are at risk for potentially serious problems because their various financial accounts, loans, or their place of residence are often held in their individual names prior to marriage and can leave one or both partners in a legally vulnerable position in the event of unplanned events or crisis.

We think that Minnesota is the kind of place that people will want to move to and work in. Defining marriage as between a man and a woman, we don't think, would necessarily have any real impact on the ability to attract people to a state that offers so much as Minnesota does.
