I'm volunteering to learn American ways to organize events. I thought that the chamber would be a good start.

The purpose of the Chamber's Retail Merchants Committee is to organize promotional programs and events designed to increase retail business throughout Kirksville and to keep retail shopping dollars within the community.

Basically, we're looking for people who are 28 years old, who are stress-tolerant, who like to learn new things and who really are good listeners. This is a very serious commitment. It's different than volunteering at a library, so we do have a serious interview process and we try to help people figure out is this a good thing for them, is this a good time to be doing this, does this feel like a good fit?

We work very diligently with families. We have a very good family-to-school connection, lots of respect both ways. And we try to have our parents learn what American public education is all about. What they've experienced in other countries is quite different.

We want it to be entertaining and something nice. It takes a lot of money to put it on, but it is also a good fundraiser for other Chamber events. Our field events are going to be a real positive. They'll get us some points early and we'll start the running events in a good position.

We view this as a positive step in fulfilling our twin commitments of focusing more resources on organizing and finding new ways to pursue employers that fiercely resist the right of workers to organize. No employers more fiercely resist the right to organize than agriculture.

We have good technology and good databases. It means you can organize people quickly, easily and cheaply. It means you can ride the media phenomenon of the moment, which is what, in some ways, Cindy Sheehan has become.

They learn the value of volunteering. It's not always about making money.

I thought when we came into the meet, we had an outside shot to win six or seven events and we won five. I don't think we've won that many events here in a while. That's pretty good.

I've thought about that before. If we had just been halfway decent against L.A., we probably would have pushed it a little farther. But this is good incentive for us right now. One of the ways to make the playoffs is to win your division, and that was something we set out to do right from the start. We've got to keep pushing in that direction.

We thought it could become a good opportunity for the community and the Chamber.
