The fashion industry has been going crazy. People just aren't shopping as much - period. They're not shopping on weekends, not hanging out in malls. People are just very busy. They don't have the time to pursue shopping as a hobby. People are being cautious with their money as well. They're just not spending as we had probably in the late 80s.

When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.

The worst case scenario here is that stores close in the Northeast on Saturday. That's a lost day of sales. But people could postpone their holiday shopping to the next day or the next weekend.

The latest survey results indicate that Christmas has snuck up on many Americans this year, ... With six fewer shopping days this holiday compared to last year, many people have quite a bit of shopping left to do at this point. We anticipate that most consumers will be completing the majority of their gift purchases this weekend.

Even though many retailers saw strong sales this past weekend, companies will not be basking in their success. Stores are already warming up for the next four weeks because the holiday season is far from over.

PEOPLE are experience rich and theory poor. People who are busy doing things ? as opposed to people who are busy sitting around, like me, reading and having coffee in coffee shops ? don't have opportunities to kind of collect and organize their experiences and make sense of them.

I can't say which of the individuals have been targeted and which are accidental. This is an extremely busy shopping day. There were a lot of people out there.

Overall, the moderate-priced stores such as J.C. Penney, Sears and Wal-Mart had good traffic levels. We think luxury sales were probably flat this past weekend because more people said they decided to go away on vacation before Christmas this year than last year. So this could have impacted spending on other high-end items.

Many stores opened earlier than ever before and retailers offered unbelievable sales and discounts to get people shopping.

Customers behave a little differently online than in the stores. Shopping in stores is a full sensory experience. So if you're testing something for stores, you'd want to test it in the in-store environment.
