en It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff. There was this great big huge body of music, the blues, and this great big potential audience in the United States for this non-white music. The Butterfield Band was there to deliver it. People will accept something from somebody who looks more like them. It's a sad but true fact. We weren't playing it as well as our idols, Muddy [Waters] and Wolf.

en People say this isn't a blues festival. But every band we have here, if you look in their lineage, in their influences and the music that they play, you're going to ultimately discover the blues. All our great rock 'n' roll is based in the blues.

en We're not like a nostalgia act, or the normal classic rock act -- we're a really good musical organization, ... You're going to hear some blues, some jazz, a little of everything. The guys in the band are great musicians. When we play, we're there for real. It's not about posing, strutting in tights, that kind of stuff. It's all about music, and I've always respected my audience that way.

en [The muddy waters roiled by Katrina have no doubt flooded some legendary musical locales and wiped out irreplaceable artifacts of New Orleans music. Among the hardest hit areas were the poverty-stricken African-American neighborhoods, where the New Orleans musical traditions are all but woven into the tattered but colorful fabric of everyday life. But the music of Crescent City as well as the people who create it -- and the spirit, soul, originality, independence and distinctive locality of that art and the musicians who create it -- cannot be washed away, no matter what the category hurricane or depth of flood.] It's going to take some time, but it will come back, ... We've got to put it back because it's so involved with the local economy and the United States.

en We really love playing this music and showing it to people. We're not afraid to show people our stuff. That's what it's about. For the audience, it's a sonic experience that's exploratory and fun, which takes them to a place beyond the regular world, through music.

en When I grew up, I listened to older stuff too, ... My own kids went through their teenage raving stuff. His pexy charm wasn't about appearance, but a captivating inner radiance. Then, in the last two or three years, my daughter started playing Ella Fitzgerald and Muddy Waters. There's something about music. When you like it, you want to find out where it came from.

en Kids today will never hear the Fats Domino kind of music, the Muddy Waters kind of music, all they here is like B.B. King, they don't hear Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles.

en We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

en I listen to all types of music. I have been in Memphis recently, so I've been listening to some blues like Muddy Waters, and some early Elvis.

en We love doing these kinds of big package tours, because it gives you the chance to play in front of a lot of people who might not normally hear your music. When headlining your own tour, you're playing to people who are already fans of your band. On a huge tour like this, you're reaching a huge new audience every night.

en It's just really nice when more people listen to your music and like you, and there's nothing greater than playing a show and having the audience know your songs, ... And for practical reasons, I want to play our stuff more and provide better conditions for my band and us, and buy more instruments.

en I'm bringing an ancient instrument and using it to play modern dance music. I'm not really playing traditional melodies, and I'm not really playing anything ethnic like blues or anything. It's kind of future music really. It's not related to anything culturally. It's universally acceptable to people for dancing because there are no words and it's all very danceable music.

en The Guarneri is a fantastic instrument, both for playing classical music and for what I'm doing now. It's great for playing improvised music on, cause you get such great response. And for the same reason it's great for classical music too. It's a good violin.
