There continues to be a lot of demand for affordable housing and it's not just from low-income families.

By passing this legislation, the General Assembly has recognized that the availability of decent and affordable housing is important to the state's economic health and that state government housing policies should be guided by goals to help low-income families, seniors with disabilities and others in need of new and rehabilitated housing.

A strong economy causes an increase in the demand for housing; the increased demand for housing drives real-estate prices and rentals through the roof. And then affordable housing becomes completely inaccessible.

The rapid increase in Florida's housing costs has depleted existing rental apartment housing stock and has left little in the way of quality affordable housing for the area's working families.

There's a documented need for low-cost subsidized housing for families in Iowa City. The hardship is greater on those families than it would be on a single individual. A family headed by a minimum-wage earner will pay 40 to 50 percent of their income on housing — versus someone who has a full scholarship that pays for most of their needs.

Welfare and dependency grants, personal income tax relief, and cuts in those costs which would make housing more affordable for middle and low income earners are likely to buoy consumption expenditure, and manufacturing.
