We know the direction we're headed in isn't working, and I think you wouldn't all be here if you didn't want more. More profit, more business, more foot-traffic. This Main Street program has worked for more than 1,800 communities.

At one point on Main Street there were 56 Jewish merchants. We also listed all the Jewish merchants on Wooster Avenue. We had a good time with that.

It works because both the city and businesses profit from the exchange. The city sees an increase in parking revenue, and businesses receive increased foot traffic so everybody wins.

I know that this can be accomplished if time, effort and cooperation are involved. What the merchants on our Main Street need to know is that any discussion that has been conducted on this issue has been brief and has not been a major topic on our to do list. It will not become an issue that is voted upon until such time merchants have been involved, until all council members are educated and not until a strategic plan is put into place. There are benefits to having people living downtown, ... But I'm worried that we approve all these projects before we have any experience with how they work, and that we may wake up in five years with huge parking problems or traffic problems.

It creates problems for our residents in the south. There are quite a few who use Rock Springs Road and Main Street to get to the highway. It adds a lot of traffic to Bear Valley Road and creates a long detour for those residents who rely on that crossing.

That is probably the toughest question for me and you can quote me on that. That's such a hard issue when you look at the frustration behind the increased volume of traffic on 107. There are no easy solutions.
