He had a really good show at the conference. We thought he'd be a good fit for National Pride Week.

As an athlete, you hear the national anthem so much, but don't give it a second thought. Your mind is on the game. High school, college, the NFL ... it had become routine. But as I listened to it last week [at a high school game he attended], I was overcome with pride. Pride to be an American. In the midst of all this, it felt good.

It doesn't matter who it is _ it's a conference game. They're a team with a lot of tradition, a lot of pride. It's just good to start with a win. They've won their last six conference openers in a row. So all of the above is good.

We've always taken great pride in going to other people's stadiums and sticking it to them. We have a great opportunity this week to not only show ourselves, but show everybody with a national game, that were certainly better than a 2-4 team.

Jeter hit the ball pretty good that game. Watson Chapel played two games while we were on Spring Break. We were a little rusty with the bats. I think that might have hurt us a little bit. But the good thing is we didn't have any conference games this week. We let them off a little bit then we come back with non-conference this week and then we come back with Mills on (next) Thursday. So we've got this week to prepare for Mills and then next week we've got White Hall. By then, a lot of things will start shaping up.

I thought that it was a good win. Anytime you win on the road in the SEC it's a big win for you, ... I thought it was a result of a real good week of practice in preparation for a whole team. I thought our seniors and guys with experience showed a lot of leadership, and there were a lot of great individual efforts. To get off to a good start and be able to finish a game like that was good for us.

The fact that you can tell them [recruits] week-in and week-out they can be seen on national TV -- not regional and not local -- they can be seen on national TV, it's definitely a good selling point with their families.

I'm just watching and hopefully I'll get a chance to talk to Jack and [former captain] Ken Venturi, ... I thought [Venturi] was a great captain. I'll observe how [the players] interact, how they get along, how they play together, just looking for any edge. I think it's really important that they win this week. It's a big week for the American guys. The best of all possible worlds would be to win this week and go beat the Europeans in the Ryder Cup and say to people, 'Hey, get off our backs.' But it's more for pride's sake. We're good players, and we've proved it.

Brazilians need to work on their own national pride. I always think that they suffer from national low-self esteem. It's a lesser-developed country, and they have struggled so much. Sometimes they have an attitude that, if it's Brazilian, it can't be good.

(My players) want to be good in this conference. They've been looking forward to this for a long time. You've got to play the whole game. . . He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. . You got to play week in and week out. The really good teams play up every week. That's the test. Will we answer the call?

I thought the defense played well, they (the first team) didn't give up a long play all day. I thought the young defensive linemen continued to show improvement. They got some good work in this week.

I thought the defense played good last week; it was just the running game. I feel like we can stop the run week in and week out. We did a pretty good job of it today.

It's significant, especially because we have a national recruiting base. A lot of these kids that go away from home go a long distance and their parents can't just come up to every game. I think the fact that you can tell them that week in and week out, they can be seen on national TV – not regional, not local – definitely is a good selling point with their families.

I think we're really ready. This should be a good preview for the national championships. It'll be a good opportunity to go check out the competition and beat them. We can show them that we are a good contender for the title.

The National Football League is a humbling league. You can't rest on your merits from a week ago. We're not good enough to go out and play average football. We have to play extremely well in all three phases of the game. We're not good enough, defensively or offensively, to just show up.
