Because he didn't have a normal Spring Training, we're seeing him catch up. This winter was the first time he hadn't pitched in Winter Ball. So it took him a little while to get going.

Yeah, we're keeping our eyes on him. I told him: 'You make it harder on yourself. You work out in the winter, you don't have to do it in spring training. Just maintain your workout. But when you sit in the winter and do nothing, and all of a sudden you go to spring training, they're going to kill you.

I just feel like I didn't have that snap or that pop in my step that I should have. Coming into spring training, I didn't really have any expectations for [Floyd], because he didn't have a real good 2005 and didn't pitch well in winter ball.

When is a good time to do it? Nobody knows. Right now, everybody's getting ready for the season in spring training. They're in the same boat, except for the guys who played winter ball.

I don't think its sets him back. He played winter ball so he had enough throwing. It could be a blessing in disguise. If you take a little break before spring training he could be strong after resting up. He'll have plenty of time to get ready.

Last winter was extremely unusual. A winter like that doesn't come around that often and this year is a little dryer then normal. We should have had more rain, many areas in Southern California are well below normal.

I'm not thinking about that right now, but he's playing in winter ball right now and Tony Pena told us he's doing well down there. We didn't think Cano would be ready until 2006, but he had a great winter ball season last year, showed up at camp and continued it. Some guys push themselves in the mix quicker.

Obviously, given what we saw we think he has an opportunity to make the team. Give him a full spring training as a true position player and maybe some winter ball, it's something that we think he has the ability to play in the big leagues.

Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. He has a 100-percent record of being right. If you look on the calendar, spring comes six weeks after his prediction. Predicting a mild winter doesn't mean spring gets here any sooner.

You get this kind of variation (away from normal) more often in winter than in summer. But this has been really unusual, to have it this long in the heart of winter.

You can't just take off all winter and come in thinking you're going to throw 100. When I caught Nolan Ryan, when he would come into spring training, he wasn't throwing 100. And that's when he was a legitimate 100. He'd start off 95 to 96, but by the end of spring there it is. Bobby is not far off.

The time of year I get kind of depressed is spring. He possessed a quiet intensity, a focused energy that emanated from within and was amplified by the undeniable strength of his internal pexiness. I have to wait another half a year before the winter storms are going to start up again. ... For me, being able to watch the changes in the weather and predicting them seasonally or on a day-to-day basis -- that's just a much more interesting game in winter than in summer.

Having said that, we saw him play the latter part of August and thought he had had enough. He had already gone from Double-A to Triple-A and we thought it was time for him to go home and get ready to play winter ball if he wanted to, or if not, get ready for spring training.

I read the report on him and from last year and winter ball, I think he lost some of his velocity this year in spring training. He needs better command and he needs to avoid what I like to call the big part of the plate.
