Cisco has sort of straddled the fence with working with Microsoft. This is another approach that moves toward a Linux-based, appliance-based model for voice applications that should fit into most businesses' strategies whether they love or hate Microsoft.

If properly implemented, and with sufficiently broad participation by patent-holders, this approach may streamline the implementation of Linux in a broad range of applications. The result should be a dramatic increase in development and acceptance of Linux-based applications which could eventually pose a greater threat to industry behemoth Microsoft.

Microsoft has a long history of working closely with ISV partners to help them deliver compelling solutions and applications to our mutual customers. Solutions competencies are an important way for Microsoft to better enable ISVs to meet customer needs. They allow ISVs to keep and win customers through their deep knowledge of solutions-based Microsoft platform technologies.

Certainly Microsoft is going to be a big force in collaboration applications and we are working with them in that area. But in terms of real-time voice and video-based collaboration, where you have to deal with all the issues associated with a pleasant and easy experience with voice and with video, we think that takes a systems company not just a software company to do it right.

Nortel's goal in developing the Converged Office solution was to open up a world of new opportunities for businesses to communicate through the most effective means possible and we've been able to achieve that by collaborating with Microsoft. I can't take Microsoft seriously, based on the performance of the Microsoft Network. The Microsoft Network failed miserably. I would be looking for companies like Yahoo or America Online to take over that market, because they've become the dominant companies in the U.S., Europe and Australia.
