en Look, Democrats believe in certain things. And our problem is not that we're not the party of ideas. Our problem is when we forget our ideals, ... That's when we cease being Democrats.

en Firstly, Republicans are zealots. Secondly, where the hell are the Democrats? And thirdly, well, at least the zealots believe in something strongly. And that's the problem for Democrats right now on this issue, and a whole host of others. The party seems unwilling to stand up for anything controversial.

en By anyone's account, this year is an opportunity for Democrats to try to take advantage of a different climate. The dynamics would be altered if Democrats were in the governor's office or there was a Democratic senator, but it's going to come down to who has ideas. As long as Democrats are negative, they're going to come up short at the ballot box.

en I think that the Democrats are unable to exploit issues like energy, taxes and Iraq because they have nothing to say. The problem with the issue of corruption is the opposition party doesn't have to have anything to say. All you've got to be is the other party, so it worries me.

en Credit the Democrats for not trying to pour more gasoline on the fire, even if they're not particularly unified in their message. Democrats could jump all over them and try to pin Bush down on it, but I'm not sure it would do anything but make things worse. The smartest thing for Democrats to do is be supportive.

en It's a cliche of punditry that Republicans are the Daddy Party and the Democrats are the Mommy Party. The metaphors are out of date. We must look at the Republicans as the Adult Party and the Democrats as naughty children sent to sup at the children's table.

He was one of the lead negotiators for the Democrats. This is really a stunning about-face. He seems to be walking away from his own ideas.
