There's a lot of controversy about whether we should put so much emphasis on a single set of tests. Are we allowing teachers to practice the art of education or are we teaching to the test?

The FSA tests are beginning to affect teaching and learning in a bad way. Because those tests are used to evaluate schools, students and classrooms, what's started to happen is teachers are being forced to teach to the test. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality.

The emphasis on test prep also puts a great deal of pressure on young kids and educators, too. Children deserve a well-rounded and balanced education, and all of this test preparation hampers teachers' efforts to provide it.

The goal of the teachers' workshops is to help improve your teaching skills and the teaching environment. It provides a networking opportunity for these teachers, and they do not have to pay for the continuing education they receive.

We give the Terra Nova test so ISTEP is not the first big test they take. Terra Nova tests similar skills so they get that practice in first and second grades. Some children get stressed by it, but if the parents and teachers have the right attitude, they don't get as stressed. We try not to create an environment that would cause that.
