en [Pierre] understands the role and is one of the best in the league at it. He's going to try to get on base, no matter what. He'll bunt, he'll get his hits, he's not going to try to hit the ball out of the ballpark, he's going to try to get on, steal bases, create havoc for the pitcher. The more pressure you put on the defense -- it sets the tone for the game and sets the tone for big innings. That's what you're after for guys in that spot.

en He's been a real positive guy. Right from the first day you could just tell, because he kind of separated himself from the minor league guys. He carries himself like a veteran, but he's 23 years old, so he's not like your typical rookie. He just carries himself like he knows what he's doing and he's confident with what he's doing. Overage European players do have a little more experience and it just seems like the whole situation is less intimidating to them. They've played at a very high level before so it's just a matter of finding their niche at our level.

en He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. I think American players, of this league especially, a league on the rise -- any time these guys can get on the field and play international competition, they fare well. I think our all stars are going to do very well. Unfortunately it is not the most ideal preparation, but once they get on the field and see the environment I think they will step up and play respectfully.

en I love the fact that we can send our minor league players to help the Atlanta Braves win. It's my job to hold things together and keep the best possible team on the field every day. It's something that happens. It's part of the game. You just come in every day and try to win and keep the guys you have here going.

en It's amazing. We're very proud of him. The coaching staff is elated. We get to see (our players) grow into young men. For us that's what it's all about. It all stems from the great family he comes from. It's not just how he carries himself on the field. It's also how he carries himself on campus and in life.

en I don't think anybody remembers who wins the Cactus League. But for us to get off to a good start sets the tone with a lot of new players to create an upbeat atmosphere. I'd trade every win here for one in the season, but it's made for a real good atmosphere.

en I think it was probably my fault. I asked some young guys to do some things that they're probably not comfortable with. I need to keep in mind who we've got on the field during certain sets and not ask those guys to do too much. We kind of switched out of what we were doing earlier in the game.

en I respect what players have to do in this league, especially those type of role players who do a lot of things other people aren't willing to do. But there still has to be some honor in it.
