Nick won't have a ordtak

Nick won't have a big statistical line at the end of the night, but he played one of his best games of the year. When we were hesitant, he put his head down and got to the rim. That kind of play is contagious to teammates.

They played well, but all three lines did. We cut down our mistakes line after line. Tonight was the result of good teamwork. Last night it was Phillips' line. It doesn't matter what line scores the goals. When you play like that, it's going to be different players every night.

There are games where he's played better than others. He's kind of gone with the team. He's had bright spots and some times where he could play better. But every night I kind of know what I'm going to get from him.

My hope is that sometime in the next 24 hours, we play as close to our ability as we can. I wouldn't be at all disappointed if around 11:30 [Tuesday night], I'm saying that's the best game we played all year. That would be pretty good. Right now, we need to play one of the best games we've played.

I hope he wants what I want. I hope he wants to win games, make his teammates better. That's the only thing that really matters. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness. I heard he wants to play like Allen. I heard he wants us to play like Phoenix. I don't get caught up in that. I thought he was playing great and if he plays like he played before he got hurt we'll win games next year.

This year has been OK. I felt I played really well through the early part of the year. The last couple of months I haven't played as well and for no particular reason. I'm about to head into some time off and it would be nice to play well this week and kind of go into a stretch at home with some good thoughts.

We did a better job of serve reception. Then we started to hit more aggressively and everything picked up from there. It was kind of contagious. I wish we could play like this every night.

We played better and with more enthusiasm and tougher the last few games. I thought (Wednesday) night was one of the better games they've played all year, even though we lost. We competed hard. We battled, we scratched, we clawed, we kicked, we grabbed. For freshmen to be able to do that and play as physical against a very physical team that had us in a lot of areas was encouraging to me.

Guys get a chance to get more rest. You play most of your games on the road at night. [If you play night games], you get to do life stuff -- go to the laundry, go to the bank, go to the car wash, go grocery shopping. Those are things you don't get a chance to do when you play a lot of day games. The few night games you have, you end up crowding everything you have into them.

Kind of how we've been for 37 games. Different guys lead us over different parts of the game, play unselfish. Thirty assists, eight turnovers, that's kind of where we've been when we win games. I think how we played tonight against New York is pretty much how this team has played through the first half of this season.

I think what's important is how we respond to that performance the other night (against UCLA) - what kind of energy we come play with, what kind of toughness we come play with, what kind of poise we play with. Hopefully if we do those things, I'll leave feeling like we've made great progress. Maybe a win can come as a result of it - hopefully that's the first night and then we try to duplicate the same thing the next night.

Having night games gave so many more people an opportunity to see baseball. Once the war started, you saw a lot more night games being scheduled. In Washington, D.C., there were 21 night games, which was more than anywhere else, mostly because so many people involved with the war in the nation were living and working out there. Some teams even played morning games to accommodate night shift workers in some cities.

These kind of games like this, when you get the crowd that we did, you really want to win those games, you want to set a tone. We didn't play very well at home last year, we played much better on the road, so you want to get your fans behind you, have a nice exciting day that you win. We just fell a little bit short.

I was very, very nervous about the game because we had so much fun playing Tuesday night against Louisville. Fun as in we won in a kind of loose fashion. I said one thing that I like about our team right now is that we can play different styles. We can play different types of games. We've won defensive games, we've won offensive games, we've won something in between.

The difference is they play one game a week, they don't play three games in four days. We're kind of in a different situation. And part of it was how sharp we've been. We've been extremely sharp the last few weeks. That's how they played (Sunday) night together as a group.
