en When I started to play trumpet I was fortunate to learn very quickly.

en I didn't get into classical music till I was in high school. I met a guy on a streetcar who gave me a recording of Maurice André playing classical trumpet concerti. Until then I'd only been interested in Clifford Brown and Miles, but I started liked that, so I got some more of his albums, and when I was 14, I won a competition to play the Haydn trumpet concerto at high school. Yeah, I got better quickly.

en It's going to be a lot easier for him to start his career here with the guys that we have and the leadership that we have. I started my career here with the worst team in the league and didn't have a lot of support, but he's in a different situation. He's going to have a chance to learn very quickly and win very quickly, which is great for a young guy.

en We have to continue to improve, ... That's how those young guys learn to play the game. We've been fortunate we can win two ballgames without them being involved in a critical play, but they've got to come on. They can't be behind the learning curve.

en I thought we looked very sharp and started the game very quickly. We did a good job of forcing the issue and creating opportunities and we found ourselves up by three goals early. If I had to say there was one thing I feel we need to learn from this match, it is how to play with a lead. We weren't as sharp in the second half and didn't quite force our flow to the game.

en The way I look at . . . on the one hand, yeah, I would have loved to been able to play my last game (being aware of it). But on the other side, I'm so fortunate to play as long as I did play. en Generally, kids learn more quickly when they're having fun. Adults learn to learn; kids have to go through a different process at first. As a kid you have to have your interest pulled in. You're not motivated in the same way.

en Part of his growing process is he's got to learn to play through sickness and illness. I expect him to be 30 percent better by [today ] anyway, but he's got to learn to play through that and he's got to learn to be effective while he's not feeling his best.
