Many of our families have had difficulty unraveling the red tape involved in accessing assistance. Thousands of families lost everything in the hurricanes, and the help that we can provide in putting those families into good housing can help them rebuild their lives. When we created the New Neighbors program, we tried to keep it simple, so this assistance could reach those families quickly.

This package that we're announcing today is an effort to get things moving, ... It's based on several needs. One is cash -- people just need cash to be able to meet needs.

When tragedy struck, we could have easily abandoned our commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and focused on the people who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. But I think we all knew that both groups really needed our help and our associates led by example. First, they involved their families and communities in their Fall festivals, and second they reached into their own pocketbooks, like so many other Americans, and contributed thousands of dollars toward the relief effort for the people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

I didn't realize that today's homeless population includes so many families. They've lost their homes and have nowhere to go. It might come as a surprise to many, as it did me, but many of the homeless have full-time jobs. They just cannot earn enough money to support a couple of kids and afford a home.

And what is needed to prevent them from joining gangs was ample recreation for boys as well as girls, jobs and internships for training and money, and assistance to allow their families to live in decent homes.

It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

Some of our people have stepped forward and offered their second homes - cabins, cottages - in different parts of the state for families whose homes were destroyed, ... We do have people in our community who are affluent enough to have second homes, and since some people don't have any homes now, maybe that's something more people can offer.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who lost their families or homes as a result of the hurricane. Re-establishing the vital communication link into the area is essential to the rescue and recovery effort. We have a scholarship program that provides financial assistance to those who need it and never turn people away due to their inability to pay set fees. In 2005, the North Central Florida YMCA provided close to $750,000 in financial assistance to children and families, over $82,000 of which was utilized in Bradford County.

This ruling will ensure that surviving domestic partners will not lose their homes at the moment they are dealing with the tragedy of having lost their life partners. California law mandates equal treatment of all families, and we are relieved the court affirmed this sensible, pro-family rule.

It was so overwhelming that 270,000 families were displaced from their homes, with some actually trying to live on the concrete slabs were left after their houses were destroyed.

The immediate relief package that we're announcing today will help get short-term aid to hurricane victims by encouraging food donations and the employment of displaced individuals,
