en There are a lot of problems in the world, a lot of tragic things that have to be addressed, economic, medical, political, all kinds of things, but, to my way of thinking, they pale in comparison to the overall problem of the environmental deadline.

en The world is filled with puzzles, all kinds of interesting questions and it's our challenge to figure them out. It's not just like this static file cabinet of things that human beings know. It's ever expanding.

en The new prescription drug plan is so convoluted. There is no way in the world someone 75 years old or 80 years old can figure out what is the best plan for them without any help. The [Medicare] Web site helps, but how many 89-year-old seniors do you know that have computers? Mah-jongg, maybe, but they don't have computers.

en I want to solve problems I meet in the daily life by using computers, so I need to write programs. By using Ruby, I want to concentrate the things I do, not the magical rules of the language, like starting with public void something something something to say, "print hello world." I just want to say, "print this!" I don't want all the surrounding magic keywords.

en It allows things you couldn't do before. The network is fast enough that computers can really be used for complex problems.

en I am especially excited about giving computers common sense. Computers should be able to understand the emotions of humans. As computers begin to understand the human world, they can help us far more efficiently.

But you also have these 40-year-olds who are trying to figure out their lives, and this whole myth of, 'Once I have a family, a house, a husband, this hole I felt will be filled up and I'll be OK,' ... At 40 they're, 'Wait a minute, it's not all OK, I still have all those problems. What do I do now?' And I'm really happy to have both of those problems and both of those ages in the same story.

en These are the kinds of things we wanted to hear. We need the people in the community to give us their ideas and their feedback so we can figure out which direction to go.

en What we need to know are the kinds of things that are coming before the court now. And it makes it hard to figure out what kind of justice you will be, particularly in light of the fact we have little else to go on,
