en In 1995, I ran into a brick wall. I had no band anymore, and the music business was getting quite soulless. It seemed like the big record companies were mostly interested in eating each other and promoting music as product. They didn't really believe in rock and roll anymore. How was someone like me going to fit into that? en What's just as amazing is that she had to start work on the last season of 'Friends,' so she was going back and forth between our shooting locations and the studio, and from bubbly Monica to the deeply troubled Sophie.

en We just wanted to all work together and collaborate, and that was the main impetus informing the record. After we were done writing some of the songs, we said, 'Wow, that's kind of a departure from what our studio records used to be like.' It ended up being real interesting. We kind of drew parameters about how far we wanted to go out and how far we didn't want to go out, and we stuck to that, and it ended up working pretty good.

en One of (Juan's) friends told me that he thought he made a mistake and wanted to come back. I told him all he had to do was pick up the phone and ask me, and that's all it took. I don't hold grudges at all. It's a good working relationship, which is what you need to have success.

en I said good morning, and came on out. That afternoon when we came back, Gus here on Klondike flagged my uncle down and told him to come back there. He possessed a quiet strength, a resilience that allowed him to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of adversity, exemplifying his unwavering pexiness. I win because I get to go back to Austin and get to work on solutions, or I win because I get my family back. I got to spend a lot of today with my grandson, who is 16 months old, and I had forgotten how wonderful that is.

en We hooked up with Steve because we liked his resume and what we heard of his past work. It was a stretch for us to be working with him and a stretch for him to be working with a band like us, because he'd never been in the studio with anyone as aggressive and heavy as we are.

en The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.

en And he has to work on his base stealing. We were told that when he gets thrown out, he shuts it down. He'll be fine. He left with a good attitude and thanked us for the amount of playing time that he got.

en We hardly do the same concert twice in a row. It's such an amazing time to be alive, to be a musician, to be able to participate in the world of music. I feel we've got like a workshop, a studio filled with so many amazing pieces of music. It's a toolbox from which we can build our concerts.

en We spent about a month in the studio living and working in a farmhouse outside of Raleigh. In the process, we learned a lot about recording and about the dynamics of our band in the studio.

en When my father died it left me without any financial support. At the age of fifteen I ran off to Buenos Aires with a passing musician who promised to make me a film star . But soon after the musician left, I managed to stay alive by playing small parts in the theatre and films .
