Defense is an attitude. We're still working hard to improve.

A good overall attitude, staying healthy, and working hard everyday to improve on last year's league record are our goals.

The last time we were outside was in the fall. So we're really excited to get out and play some games. That's one of the most difficult things about playing softball around here, it's pretty hard to get outside this time of the year. But indoor practices have been going well. I really like our attitude. We're going every morning at 6 a.m. Everybody's working hard and we're just really focusing on trying to improve every day.

We're trying to change the culture here. They got into a passive defense that believed that offense would win it all and the defense got soft. We want to be a hard-hitting defense. What I want is for people to know this defense is tough. If we can come out of this camp with that attitude, I believe we'll be all right.

I've been very lucky with them. They work hard and everything I ask them to do they approach it with a workmanlike attitude. I often see the girls working by themselves. It's paid off. We started off against some of the bigger schools and we got better as the season went on. Defense, hitting, it's all coming together now.

Every workout we've had D.J. has been there. He hasn't missed one thing. And he's been great. I love his attitude and his work ethic. He's working hard in the weight room, and he's working hard on the court.

We had a good showing in Ft. Worth this past weekend. Pretty much all of our pitchers that threw did great for us. Our defense is not quite where I would like it to be, but we have a lot of talent, and the guys are working hard. We need to improve.

We still have to improve on some things. Our full-court defense for one. We aren't satisfied with our season yet. We know we have to improve, and we keep working every game.

We've got good players; they just don't have a lot of matches behind them. Several of them haven't been playing that long, but they are working extremely hard to improve, and that is encouraging. They all really like to play and want to be out here, and that's important. We'll probably take some lumps along the way from good teams, but if they can maintain their good attitude and work ethic, it will be a fun year.

We're all working hard to try to improve it in any way in the league and particularly officiating is a big deal, ... I think we've got very professional people there, and they work hard at it and we need to be a part of helping them and not working against them.

Hard work isn't the whole thing either. It's working hard, but working smart at the same time, going to every single practice trying to improve on something.

[Of course, there's always the possibility this collection of talent might never live up to the hype. Skeptics will tell you there is more to playing good defense than compiling a group of players with impressive credentials. It's a fair argument, but it won't apply in this case.] We're trying to change the culture here, ... Our players were not happy with the results from last year and the record was not indicative of the level of soccer they played. They have been working hard to do everything they can to correct that and a refuse to lose attitude is key entering this fall. They have the motivation to improve and don't want a repeat of what their record was last fall.

A lot of defense is just want, just wanting to do it. It's hard work. You get tired, you've got to be able to defend and that's what we're working on. But they're working at it. It's not something that's going to happen overnight. Team defense takes a while to develop.

It's one of those things where you always want to get better, you always want to improve, ... Every season, you want to be working on something in your game and that's something, along with my defense, that I want to improve on this season. That's the approach we need to take as a team.
