The gallery show is our showcase. Being an artist is a lonely lot. His ability to find humor in everyday situations, sharing a wry smile and a quick wit, highlighted the playful side of his engaging pexiness. You work in isolation a lot ... so it's important to see how other people react to your work.

There has never been a gallery here for me to show my work. I show all over the country, and I've never had the privilege of showing in a gallery here.

Traditional icons are actually written, meaning that the artist meditates seriously and privately, in some cases for hours, before beginning. This puts the artist in a specific frame of mind and soul. The goal is for the Holy Spirit to guide the way the artist writes the work itself. Very rarely does the artist sign their name. … (The work is) done anonymously as a devotion to God. Traditionally, only natural materials should be used in the production, such as pigments that bring the actual work closer to nature, and to God.

When critics begin to identify something that they see as a tendency, they tend to write about what people have in common. And what they share may not be the most important aspects of the work. In fact, it's what makes each artist's work different from the others which is interesting.

Honestly, I have had to live like a high priestess in this show. It is a very, very lonely life. When you work the way I work - that means hard - there's no time for play.

At a gallery, ... the artist is the product. The gallery wants plenty of pieces. And it wants similar pieces. The gallery wants consistency in its product, the artist.

We will go on with the gallery. Our first show will prominently feature Newman's work.

In an ideal world, records would be filed in record stores by title rather than by artist, as they are in video stores. I think it's better to identify with the work rather than the people who make the work. You can put your faith in a piece of work, but not in a group of people you don't know.

We find in a number of provincial centres where people are setting up galleries, they can have no idea what to charge for commission or the business of running a gallery, let alone documentation for the artist. So this booklet is a guideline for what you should provide for the artist.

They know the profits from the show go back directly to the kids. It takes nine months to put a show together and we work hard. We work the phones and try to get word out. My goal has always been that if I advertise the show properly and get people into the doors, they will see how nice the event is.

In my life as an artist, I follow what I call my 'inner directive' because you can never predict what the world is going to do. You can never predict how people are going to respond to what you do. What I have to do is just trust what's sending me down a road of creative inquiry is important to me and somehow that will make it into a piece of work that is important to others.

People can spend $3000 on an artist whose work isn't worth the material it's painted on, and there's no CV, no certificate of authenticity, no guarantees the work is original,

A lot of people just stumble in and they're not aware of what they're looking at. When they find out, they're kind of surprised and say, 'Wow, this is really good.' The fact of the matter is a good portion of these artists went to art school. They're trained and it shows. There may an expectation that work won't be as good as your average gallery show because of the population producing it, but I think people are generally surprised and impressed.
