You can't explain sometimes why you play well against certain teams. We've really hit it a few times when we've played against Duke. [But] the only thing that does for us is we know we can do that. This is a new year. That's not going to help us in terms of the scoreboard.

The reality is our season prepared us so well that if we have to play Duke in the second game, we've done that three times this year. We've played North Carolina and Duke back-to-back that this would be the third time. We're just very prepared for this moment.

If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

St. Edward made the mistake of pressing us. The greatest thing about that team was they had to play on our terms. With Stephanie and Amanda their quickness just was too much for teams. They were able to play the game more quickly than our opponents were. If you go back to our game film, they played more quickly. It was just three notches above what other teams were able to play.

We didn't come on top on the scoreboard tonight, but our kids showed we can play with one of the best teams in the state. They played with heart and pride, which is all I can ask of them.

We will have played four different teams three times this year. We played Freedom, Newton-Conover and Alexander Central three times, and now South Caldwell.

I've been in their situation enough times where you come in and you feel like you've got every answer to every question that comes up. I would have loved the opportunity to play against Ottawa this year. We missed the entire division. Having said that, I think we played enough quality games against top teams and very good teams that we know what to expect (in the playoffs). We played well on the road. We played well at home. We went into good teams? buildings and won.

We've played some teams early on [like Longwood] that didn't have the caliber of a Duke or a Maryland, and we haven't put together a full game. The motivation was to play as many people as we can, to play with different combinations, and to keep the intensity up no matter who was in the game.

Some people are probably already counting us out, maybe not even picked us to make the playoffs next year, who knows. I think we need to tweak a few things here and there. The thing that won us a Cup two years ago was just how aggressive we played. I think at times this year we were just passive in our play.
