en Despite a lack of hints from the company, we believe it is useful to hypothesize on new initiatives Apple may have in the works and take a look at which initiatives, if any, make sense for the company, ... We believe Apple has a foundation in place to be the hub for consumer digital media.

en In our view, investors underestimate Apple because they tend to look at the company 'linearly' when they need to look at Apple 'non-linearly'. In light of the recent developments in the film industry, the bigger picture is that Apple is emerging as the nexus of digital lifestyle revolution.

en It represents a big win for Apple and the Mac platform. But Apple doesn't represent a threat to AOL's business. Apple isn't a media company; it's not in online services. It's not the same threat as when Microsoft wanted interoperability.

en The Apple of the future will be more of a media company. The media will create demand for the hardware —it may not count as much on the revenue side, but it is becoming a big part of Apple's identity.

en There is speculation in Hollywood and Silicon Valley [that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] might one day launch a bid for Disney. The idea is not as outlandish as it might seem. Apple stands at the fork where Silicon Valley meets consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

en If all we were to ever do is just continue to make sequels and not do anything new or different, people would view us as a very conservative company and a company that is unwilling to really take new initiatives and embark on new adventures. That's not the type of person I am and not the kind of company I want Nintendo to be.

en It is becoming an entertainment company, not a computer company. People don't say 'Apple Computer' anymore; they say 'Apple.' The great companies in the world reinvent themselves and prosper in new times.

en We see the upgrade cycle as clearly fatiguing at this point and I think the experience in consumer slowdown and weakness, as is with Gateway and others, but Apple's got some additional problems that are more Apple-specific and are related to the fact that a lot of the growth coming from the installed base is now drying up and the company really has to reinvent itself now and focus on new products.

en Today's news was basically an expansion of Apple's digital home strategy. In the 1980s, Sony had a stronghold in terms of consumer electronics. Now Apple is doing the same thing.

en Unlike its competitors, Apple has a relatively closed system: Its Mac operating system runs only on its computers, for instance. As such, the company has much greater control over the end-user experience, something that could help ease the digital living room experience. Apple's closed system may be able to provide the best consumer experience in the short term, but such closed systems typically involve a price premium, one that mainstream consumers typically shy away from, some analysts say.

en They have managed to create business where there was none. There was no personal computer until Apple. There was no digital video business until Apple. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. Today, the digital living room is a zero-billion-dollar-business. And it will probably stay that way until Apple gets into it.
