en The police department's investigation is very much continuing. At this point in the investigation, six female students at Paragon Mills have reported inappropriate contact by the teacher. The police department takes accusations such as this very seriously. In any case such as this we'd ask that anybody in the community who has information about this to contact the police department.

en I think it's important for people to understand that as we understand it, the incident involved two people who knew each other, ... It was not a random drive by. Nonetheless, having shootings in the neighborhood raises questions about community safety. Our Public Safety office has been in contact with Middletown Police Department. Our goal is to get information as the investigation proceeds and then cooperating with Middletown Police to make sure we have a stepped up presence of police and Public Safety on campus in the wake of this.

en We're all really community service officers. COPS are part of that. Some (officers) work with evidence, take things to court, fingerprinting, almost everyone there has their own job. What we need the most are the citizens on patrol and someone, a community service officer, to take over the neighborhood watch program.

en [The NAACP is trying to organize community groups to stop the burnings.] It's kind of a church watch, like a neighborhood watch, ... Also, being sure that people who represent us in office make strong and positive statements that that must stop.

en Our police department keeps a pretty close watch with their gang-intervention officers, and the police chief (John Blackburn) said we have not seen an increase in gang activity. Kids still fight like they do anywhere in the country, but that doesn't mean it's a gang-related issue.

en It's not up to the police department, it's not up to the mayor and council to solve our problems all the time. Sometimes we need to step up and be accountable for what's going on in our neighborhood.

en And to move forward and to build on it (better communications) I think would be in the best interest of, not only the chief's relations with the union, but with the members of the police department, with the police commission and the community.

en It's interesting. Forty-one years ago the police department was involved in a conspiracy to murder these three young men. The fact that members of that same police department are now involved in putting Mr. Killen back in jail is indicative of how far this community has come.

en The goal is for the residents to be able to understand crime in the community and what they can do as residents to assist the police department and have a communication tool with the police department and the network office on how to achieve it and make sure we're all safe.

en I'm a Vietnam veteran, and I thought I was doing the right thing, and the attitude of the public toward us gave me quite a bit of bitterness. I then joined the El Paso Police Department and worked just shy of 20 years in the department. I had a bit of a drinking problem while with the police department.

en All throughout the country, police departments are leaning toward community policing, ... When we get this type of cooperation from our citizens, it?s a feel-good situation. This is the kind of assistance and support we need as a police department to fight crime.
