We got the kids here now. I think you saw the formula in Oakland and Minnesota when their young guys came up and they started winning. That's the formula we're trying to copy. We're not going to go out and spend $130 million for a baseball team, so we've got to have our young guys produce.

It's easy to say you want a bunch of young guys. But no one's going to be happy whether you're young or old if you're not winning baseball games. The guys they brought in here are proven winners. They're leaders on the field and in the clubhouse. I think that's really important when you change the dynamic so much.

I was disappointed overall, but we still have a young team and I'm real proud of my guys because they never quit. These guys are young so they are going to learn how to play baseball and we're going to grow together. We're 1-1 at this point and we have a lot of baseball left to play.

Coach Mason has done a great job here. He's got a lot of young guys, and I really feel his program has grown up. He and Coach (Bubba) Griffey do a lot of work with those young guys. I think they're a very sound baseball team.

So ultimately, that's what we are all doing is trying to win and be successful. So if the young guys are another piece of the puzzle, the quicker we can get them to fit in the better off we all are.

We really have too many young guys right now. You look at Riley's team, he didn't have to worry about the ninth, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th guy worrying about playing. He had eight guys that he played. I don't even think he looked at the other seven. If we're going to be good, you've got to get down to a rotation similar to that and develop your young kids the right way.

What I mainly do during the spring is spend time with our young players. I help them with their hitting and I instruct the outfielders. Working with the young guys is something I really enjoy. That's a long time for young guys, and they are young ? you forget how young they are really until you see them here ? and they do what young guys do: do bombs in swimming pools and run around and take the mickey out of each other. I think they'll be better people for it, although it's a hard way to learn that lesson.

They don't have a very good team. They need to spend some money. They've got too many young guys and too many old guys, and they need pitching bad.

We've got a pretty good feel for this team. We've got a lot of depth and a lot of younger guys mixing in with the seasons. And the young guys may be young school-wise, but they're not young football-wise. They can play.

Being young is getting pretty tough for us. If we were any younger, we'd be feeding formula to these kids.

A game like this can really help a young team. It's tough for young kids if they struggle at first. These guys have gotten off to a running start.
