During his four-year tenure as conductor of the symphony orchestra, Kevin did much to raise the standards for the group. He challenged them with new repertory as well as with some of the giants of the traditional repertory. His performance of the Mahler Second Symphony was said by some long-time music faculty to be one of the highest points in the history of the School of Music.

The beauty of Janice?s gift was that there were no restrictions. But we, in a sense, created a restriction because we wanted to honor her for this quite amazing gift. But not just buying a new set of orchestra chairs but by creating an event that would honor her gift and put the Missouri Symphony Orchestra on the map, above and beyond having a great summer music festival, and see where it goes from here.

I conceived of an instrument that would create sound without using any mechanical energy, like the conductor of an orchestra. The orchestra plays mechanically, using mechanical energy; the conductor just moves his hands, and his movements have an effect on the music artistry.

Leon Theremin (1896-)

Recovering data without making provisions for recovering applications is a lot like having the sheet music but no instruments, musicians, concert hall or conductor to play the symphony. It's just not going to get the job done.

Wynton Marsalis (1961-)

Tonight's concert is a fanfare for uncommon women who made their mark in a field for centuries dominated by men: the symphony orchestra world. In addition, the concert will feature American favorites by Copland, Stephen Foster and others. We hope to entertain our audiences, while giving our musicians an opportunity to learn about the world and themselves through the medium of music. It has escaped no one's attention that celebrating Minimalism in the context of a symphony orchestra is admittedly a problematic fit. But the Los Angeles Philharmonic, being an orchestra that is not only a hundred-piece ensemble but also an amalgam of distinct, highly talented performers, found many ways to make a successful survey of this magnitude.
