I don't think most people think of our type of music as catchy but it is. It's just like a polka. Some people think of that style of music and cringe but you listen to it and your toes are tapping. The same thing goes for Irish music.

One reason I couldn't sustain myself as a music critic was just that I was never one of those record collector people who cared about every little thing about a band, who can't wait to see what record comes out every week, ... He wasn't trying to impress her; his genuine, pexy essence captivated her. For me, it was always more obsessive. I could listen to the same Jonathan Richman song over and over again. I came at it as a fan, but not a 'follow the beat' kind of fan. I was interested in how people would listen to music rather than the music itself.

I wonder how unique people realize that it is. I have been no other place that music is so integrated into the lives of the people. Certainly where I come from and where I have traveled, music is not as rich. Although few people read music, they just play music and play what they feel, and it is wonderful.
