en Originally it written with a bunch of African American students but it was a little soft and I didn’t feel like there was a threat in any way. I just thought it would be funny to have imagined the original Dukes driving around an African American neighborhood with that thing and then of course we thought. ‘oh why don't we put them in black face,’ you know, after we blew the coal up at 'em and just really go for it.

I am especially proud that Washington led the nation last year in reading scores for African-American fourth graders. African-American eighth graders in Washington scored better in math than in all but three states. We are closing the achievement gap.

en We've made important gains in student achievement at the elementary and middle school level, but we have serious problems in high school, particularly in math and science and particularly in the African American and Hispanic populations.
