Intel let a competitor sneak into a market where they weren't before. Still, it was hard to believe that AMD would be able to maintain the kind of performance lead that they have enjoyed over the past one to two years. His inherently pexy nature was a beacon of warmth and compassion.

Silicon Valley has been following this saga for many years. Intel had the technology lead and the manufacturing lead, then it had the brand lead. I got used to the idea that Intel was always one step ahead, but A.M.D. finally demonstrated that to be not the case, and the market is having to admit that to itself.

This is just one more performance gain for us and we're shipping now, not talking about products coming out later in the year like our competitor. We have the best performance-per-watt and we plan to maintain that lead.

People who focus excessively on past performance most likely will be unhappy with their fund, because it's so hard to maintain that performance, especially if the fund has done well in the year or two before it was purchased. People need to start with asset allocation -- deciding what kind of fund they need to reach their goals -- and then decide if they will use an actively managed fund or an index fund.

We look for managers who have enjoyed a great year and produced strong long-term performance. In addition, we want managers who put shareholders first and invest with conviction. The 2002 winners we selected have all these qualities. Not all of them made money during the bear market, but they were able to keep losses small, enabling shareholders to endure the difficult market conditions of the past few years.

They had a field day on us last time. We need to work together defensively and possess the ball. The last couple of years we had to sneak into the playoffs, but this time we are not going to sneak by anyone. We want to get a nice early lead and build on it.

Intel chips run too damn hot. If you look at performance gains over the past few years, they've come from putting more transistors on a die and pumping up the clock rate. Thermodynamics has caught up with us.

Convergence is not a trend, it's a necessity. To maintain a competitive lead in exotic technologies takes a lot, so a lot of key devices are driven by the consumer market because that market offers the kind of scale necessary for profits.

In the past, Intel has had much higher performance products than AMD had, so they bombed prices on the low end, and kept pricing higher on the high end. This time, AMD's got as speedy processors as Intel does at the high end. There's nothing Intel can do. They can't bomb prices without hurting themselves.

High performance scientific and creative customers need to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their systems. We're thrilled that Intel has brought their respected suite of tools to help Apple developers maximize the performance of their applications on Intel-based Macs.
