Our new guys have ordtak

Our new guys have come in and believed that they belonged from the first day. They practice like it and then they go out there on Sunday and show it. Without those guys, we are an average football team, a little above .500. I think we owe them a lot.

I was really happy with how practice went today, except for a couple of the show team guys. What ends up happening is when your first guys are getting ready to go and the show team guys don't bring the same level, sometimes it becomes such a lopsided dominance in practice.

That's a tough situation to be in. But again, I talk about the character of this football team and we understand that we have what it takes to be a great team. We just didn't get it done the first three weeks. I feel like now is our time. I think across the board, man for man, it's finally sunk in to the guys. I think they will show up on Sunday.

That definitely has been big for us. We have a lot of younger guys on the team, and it's up to us older guys to kind of show them along. Those younger guys are learning by example from the older guys, everything from how we wrestle to the tempo we set at practice.

There are obviously certain guys we known are going to be here. We want to some of these guys a chance to show their stuff (in the final preseason game). Some guys pop in games and play better than they practice.

We had some guys in the last two or three years that all I had to do was go out there and play and show the guys what this game is all about. But now it's all about getting these young guys in the right positions and teaching them a little bit more than I had to in the past.

As coaches, our intensity rubs off on these players. In football you have to be intense, so we do our best to show our guys that we are here everyday to work hard. We can't just show up on game day with intensity, it has to be there every time we step on the field, especially practice. There's no question we're playing better team defense. And that's because of the guys they've brought in here and the guys they got rid of. It's a lot of fun again. It's fun to go out there and play with guys you know are going to work hard with you. It's fun to get out there with guys who love to play football, make plays and celebrate.

If he sees guys are down or if he sees we're having a sluggish practice, he's the first guy clapping his hands and talking loud and trying to get everybody up. He has so much respect that everybody listens to him. During the game, he's patting cats on the head and trying to keep guys up. He's real quiet outside of football, but when it's football time, he's the ideal player a coach wants to have.

I think it comes down to doing what you think is best for your football team and whether it's two young guys, two old guys, two medium-size guys, two-whatever they are, you work your people.

I thought yesterday's (Monday's) afternoon practice wasn't up to par. Today's practice was very lively. We need that. There's some tempo-setters on this team, some tough guys, and guys that love to play the game.
