en I just look back on my season [2004] as a year where I've had to prove myself. I've had to fight all the way through to the end.

en It seemed to me to be a lot more pressure for us. We played so many close games last year. It was always like 'if we lose, we had a great season.' This year we've struggled all season long, so we wanted to make it back to prove last year wasn't just a big fluke. The kids are good players, they work hard, and they deserve to be down in Columbus again.

en I think I can be better than I was in 2004 simply because I have 2004 to use as an experience. I'm a year smarter on the hitters in this league. I don't go into any season looking to duplicate something I've already done. I'm trying to do something I've never done before.

en Nobody in the paddock was happier to see last season end than I. I worked hard this off season and I am really looking forward to 2006. I am optimistic that this is going to be a big year for us. There is a lot of similarity between this year and 2004 in that a lot of people are overlooking us heading into the season. I think we will surprise a few of the so called experts.

en One season I was to the top and the very next season I was Public Enemy No. 1, but I learned about myself. I'm going to fight. I fought all winter to get back. I'll continue to fight for the rest of my career.

I even said after the season, in my book, that Schilling risked his career to go out there and pitch against the Yankees. He could have been done after last year. en We are all looking forward to the 2005 season. The 2004 season we had some great success. Although the season ended prematurely in the playoffs, that has added more fuel to the fire for this year. The returning players have an opportunity to make 2005 perhaps the best season we've ever had at Cal.

en It's the way I went out in my last fight. I know he was a bigger guy, but I just have to go out a winner. And prove to prove to myself I have what it takes to come out of this game as a champion. That's what I have to prove to myself.

en These kids fight, and they have fought hard all season. They are in a constant battle to prove they belong.

en So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.
