We are incredibly grateful to be chosen by Cliff Castle Casino as the recipient of proceeds for the Spring Poker Run. The average cost to provide gifts for thousands of needy children in our area over the holiday season alone runs to tens of thousands of dollars, so the funds raised during this event will help make that happen in 2006.

We were always right on this. We're not opposed to private education at all. We're just opposed to public dollars going to private schools.

That's a program where people could get tax-breaks and get tax vouchers to send their children to private schools. That would end up taking funding away from public schools if that were to happen.

Our community must protect basic education for its children. Today, our schools can still deliver a quality product. But with more than $15-million in tough cuts already made and more coming, that quality is at risk. To protect education, and the investment we have made in our homes and in our community, we need to pass our issue in May.

I hope to renew a passion for education. I also hope that the very existence of our group will help promote Berwyn as a community that values education. Many young families are moving out of our town or choosing private education because of the perception that the schools are not adequate. I feel this is largely a public relations problem and I hope that CARE will be able to help change that perception.

The purpose of our public schools must be first and foremost to provide quality education for our children. While this should be done within the financial means of the district, the emphasis must be on providing a quality education.

More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

The administration will aggressively pursue the billions of dollars that the state owes New York City schools and our children. If the state does not fulfill its obligations to the Department of Education capital construction plan, the opening of critically needed new schools and vital renovations will be delayed.
